Jack White’s Debut Solo Album!

The Tesla Girl Society feels there is a strong kinship with fellow Nikola Tesla enthusiast Jack White. (His Third Man Records moniker even incorporates Wardenclyffe /Tesla Tower imagery!) In our minds Jack White is top seed when it comes to loving Tesla as much as, if not more than, The Tesla Girl Society so we are thrilled to hear Jack White’s first solo album Blunderbuss will be available April 23/24 through Third Man Records. If you’d like to check out the first single “Love Interruption” you can find it below:

We can’t wait to hear more from the album and hope to connect with Jack White ala Tesla style soon!

Review/Reading:

It’s a standard preshow ritual of mine to play an artists’ repertoire of music. It helps put my mind into a melodious state so I can understand the musicians’ musical ethos and connect with them on some sort of mental and emotional level. True to form, I decided to prep for Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter’s performance by playing their songs en route to the venue (The Showbox Marketplace). Their gentle sonicscapes and mystical narratives must have put me in a dreamlike state, because I inadvertently found myself parked in front of a psychic shop instead of the concert venue. My lightheaded miscalculation might have been coincidental, but my theory is that everything happens for a reason. I took the blunder as a positive sign. Veering back onto course I knew I was ready to enter the sonic portal of Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter and experience their esoteric world.

Venue Energy: 2/5

Most venues with storied histories such as the Showbox Marketplace have a warm energy flowing through their doors. Unfortunately, for some reason the Showbox’s energy felt stagnant and very cold. Shrugging off its initial austere quality, I entered and approached the stage. I hoped the coldness would dissipate. Luckily, during Jesse’s set the iciness moved towards the periphery and warmth returned. Perhaps the preshow frosty-effect was an anomaly, or maybe it was just a bad night for a lot of people in a confined, soundproofed space.

Band Energy: 5/5

Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter exuded a strong yet gentle quality as they stepped up to the stage. While the energy emanated from the entire the band, the strongest pull stemmed from lead songstress Jesse Sykes. Her magnetic presence could literally be seen: small sparks flew from the mic to her hand and a white-yellowish glow hovered around her silhouette throughout the show. The phosphorescent aura-like spheres intensified during songs that seem to be strewn with transcendental and seraphic themes (“Come to Mary” and “Pleasuring the Divine” to name a couple). A celestial-like connection also occurred during jam sessions between Jesse, guitarist Phil Wandscher, bassist Bill Herzog and drummer Eric Eagle. Each time their paths crossed the yellowish glow twisted around to form the number eight or infinity symbol. Truly amazing!

Fan Energy 5/5:

Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter’s fans were quiet, but very intense. They submerged their hearts and souls into each and every song and were happy to stay lost within Jesse’s quixotic lyrics describing life, love and yes, the hereafter. The audience was so entrenched that they stayed well after the band left the stage and security had to be sent in to clear out the devotees. A real rarity for a non metal, punk or rock show.

Overall Show Reading: 4/5

If not for the venue, this show certainly would’ve been a 5. Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter create symphonic stories about a soul’s quest to understand the beautiful yet dark terrain of life. It could be said they create sonic paintings, seamlessly connecting musical compositions with narratives so the mind can simultaneously hear the melodious chords and see the vivid imagery. We can only hope more artists will reach this plane, so music aficionados of all subgenres can rediscover the somewhat forgotten art of experiencing music on all levels (mental, physical and emotional) and what it feels like to truly love music.

Psychic Tidbits

The night before the show, I was reading an article about Our Lady Guadalupe, Saint Theresa and a concept called “the miracle of roses” (a Catholic miracle where roses symbolize that a prayer has been heard or a divine presence is helping a person through hardships). I hardly ever see this idea mentioned, but chalked it up as a unique occurrence.

The next evening, I was taken aback when I saw Jesse’s bags of gear and numerous guitar pedals. To my amazement, images of St. Theresa, Our Lady Guadalupe and a multitude of roses were painted on the bags.

During the show I thought about how the live mix sounded spectacular and made note of it. Within a minute of thinking this, guitarist Phil Wandescher gave a shout out to their sound engineer for the evening: “We’d like to give a huge thanks to the sound guy from The Sadies for doing an amazing job! Really great! ”

On my way home images of flora, fauna and gothic-like fairy tales continued to pop up in my head. A few minutes later I passed by a museum with images of deer, birds and forests painted on its windows. It was a mural created for a forthcoming fairytale exhibit. Perhaps it was a signal to stay connected with Jesse Sykes’ fairytale-like lyrics as well!

Mark Twain and Nikola Tesla were close friends. I guess opposites do attract....

Twain's famous "Thunder and Lightning" quote is often thought to be a nod to Nikola Tesla. "Thunder is good, thunder is impressive, but it is lightning that does the work." -Mark Twain

An image of Mark Twain playing with light in Tesla's New York Lab.

Perhaps I should take a second look at Mark Twain's posthumously published esoteric and dreamlike tale "No.44, The Mysterious Stranger."

Jules Verne Adventures Film Festival:“Legendaire” Award: A Tribute to John Wayne

The Jules Verne Adventures Film Festival is honoring John Wayne with its “Legendaire” Award on Nov. 10th, 2011! This is exciting news at the Tesla Girl Society. There has always seemed to be a strong undercurrent of synergy amongst Jules Verne, John Wayne and Nikola Tesla. All embraced their adventurous spirit, followed their passions and became luminaries within their vocations -- Jules Verne as the father of Science Fiction, John Wayne as America’s quintessential film icon and Nikola Tesla as the electromagnetic genius who discovered alternating current and foresaw wireless energy. All are definitely heroes in my mind.

CSS Show Reading
(Scroll down for show energy rating details and photos)

CSS: Sans Aura

CSS: Aura Photo

Fall is a time of year when I tend to not function at my highest level. My energy field is often bombarded with tons of etheric information. The end result is that my positive and negative wires cross where they’re not supposed to and my clairvoyant sensibilities go on the fritz. Luckily, I heard the illuminative Sao Paolo band CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) was playing a show a The Neptune Theater. I decided the best way to reignite my sixth sense receptiveness was to see the firecracker-of-a-band perform live and try to get a reading.

Energy ratings follow (1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest):

Band and Music Energy: Level 5

My mind was still in a nebulous haze when CSS hit the stage, but I was able to pick up on the most tangible vibes. The band members’ (Lovefoxx, Adriano Cintra, Luiza Sa, Ana Rezende and Carolina Parra) energy was extremely strong and very positive. Their vibrant red auras - a color that normally signifies a dynamic enthusiasm for life - seemed to form sparks and dance across the stage. The most amazing flare occurred when the lead singer Lovefoxx jumped into the pit in an attempt to get the crowd dancing. It was as if a full fireball struck the crowd! Her energy even changed from Red to Blue, perhaps a sign that her energy force was transmitting itself throughout the crowd.

Fan Energy: Level 2

The fans seemed to be under some kind of lethargic spell. Perhaps their wires also cross during the fall season. While the band did their best to raise the audience’s energy level, the vivacity emitted from the pit and seats remained fairly low. That’s too bad. The band was amazing!

Overall Show Energy: Level 4

CSS seem to have a palpable zest for life. While the fans’ energy level was definitely a bit off, it didn’t seem to bother the band. They kept forging ahead and their exuberant onstage presence continued throughout their set. CSS even managed to help my psychic malaise. I left the show feeling much more in tune with the Universe and was once again ready to take on life; not only in this plane but the ones above!

Psychic Show Tidbits:

Unfortunately, due to my intuitive perception running at a lower level I wasn’t able to pick up on many prophetic bits of information. I did have one premonition of Lovefoxx jumping on stage in a bejeweled mask and dark cape. Turns out- she did! Check the picture below!

Additional Pix:

The band also helped to ignite my clairvoyance. The end result is that I was able to up the anti in my photography. I shot a lot of pictures. To view a few more click here.

MUSIC SYNESTHESIA READINGS:

Hi everyone! This is my first music/CD review for the Tesla Girl Society blog. I thought I’d do something a little different – instead of analyzing lyrics or music, I’ll use synesthesia. You can look it up, but basically it’s following your senses and how music makes you feel.

Synesthesia Review: ANR (Awesome New Republic) Stay Kids: Deluxe Edition

20111018-ANR Cover _03.jpg

I decided to “scry” or look through reflective glass to focus my energy and to attempt to understand ANR’s leitmotif and sonic imagery. As I dipped into this musical plane of consciousness a few themes popped up in my head.

Visual and Emotive Themes:

Light Energy and Color: I continually saw a full range of vibrant, powerful colors throughout the album signaling ANR’s music was created in earnest. Sometimes the colors remained constant during a song, (a deep indigo in This is the Timing) while at other times colors converged and changed at any given moment (from red to orange to finally a bright white in It’s Around You). On a side note while listening to (Stay Kids and Big Problem) the light on my desk began to flicker to the time of the music. This seemed to be an indication that ANR was connecting creatively and musically on a good energy level.

Water: The cover of a celestial horse running along ocean shores foreshadowed the aquatic themes found throughout the songs. ANR’s sonic structures seemed to ebb and flow as if they were connected to the ocean’s tides. The aquatic themes were particularly strong in the bonus track Dead Gulf. The melody made me feel as though I was swimming and ready to go anywhere the ocean waves wanted to take me, but that being said drinking or letting too much salt water seep into your system makes you sick. There is a fine line when working with themes and for the most part ANR balance it quite well, but for some listeners the symbology might seem a bit heavy handed at times.

Positivity: I kept sensing ANR wanted to connect with the listener on a positive emotional level. Despite ANR delving into themes depicting the callous nature of life, their musical and emotive drive seemed to concentrate on finding positive solutions even in the darkest places. That being said some of their dark places were very hard to navigate even for the most optimistic person.

Third Eye: The melodies of My Dad Worked with Planes, The Endless Field of Mercury, seemed to touch on the notion of a higher level of consciousness and produce the image of a third eye. This made me feel that ANR was indirectly trying to tap into their intuitive nature and ability to empathically connect with others.

Angels: Angelic imagery can be seen as predictable, but no matter, I did see angels while listening to the songs Memorial Service and New Armor. The ethereal vision was especially prominent when ANR incorporated the harp, bells, and wind as a backdrop to their sonic structures.

Numbers:
While listening to Stay Kids Deluxe Edition, the number 17 kept popping up in my head.
Seventeen means the feeling of optimism is present I’m guessing this number means if ANR continue to develop their musicality in a positive manner they have the potential to move further towards their life purpose.

Side note: I live fairly close to a port of call and while listening to ANR the boat that I fondly call S.S. Tesla pulled into the sound. It isn’t the cargo ship’s given name, but I’ve noticed it definitely pumps out the Tesla waves; therefore its nickname. Maybe it was a coincidence, but maybe not. Either way it is cool to think about.

Deftones: Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Show Reading

I couldn’t turn down the offer to do a show reading for the Deftones at Red Rocks Amphitheater (Denver/ Morrison, CO). They are one of my favorite heavy-yet-esoteric bands and Red Rocks has been on my must-see venue list for quite some time. Adding to my already strong attraction was the fact that Nikola Tesla’s former lab is only a short drive away in Colorado Springs. My favorite mantra “guidance is internal” (Part of NASA’s Mission Control countdown to the crew of Apollo 11) kicked in and my intuition determined the combination of these three cosmic events were not a coincidence. It was a perfect Universal trifecta signaling I must read the show!

I could sense a difference in atmosphere as soon as I took my first breath of Colorado air. It seemed to be highly charged, enough so that when I touched metal I felt a minor surge of static electricity and saw a slight spark. My sixth sense knew the intense electromagnetic energy was stemming from Tesla’s former stomping grounds. I decided that I would make my way there before heading off to the Deftones concert. This meant I’d have to rush to get to the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, but my higher consciousness told me the preshow journey would help me decipher the Deftones’ eccentric levels of frequency. If I was lucky I might even be able to interpret a few of their more complex metaphysical themes (Minerva, Ghost and Diamonds are just a few of the songs that seem to dabble in epistemology and the hereafter).

I let my ability to feel minute variations in electric current pull me in the direction of Tesla’s bygone lab. The strongest energy seemed to be radiating near the Knob Hill neighborhood around Kiowa and Pikes Peak Street (fitting, since many of Tesla’s experiments in the area dealt with transmitting wireless communication from Pikes Peak to the Eiffel Tower). I stood in the area to absorb all of the magnetic current possible. I let my mind drift into a semi-meditative state, so it could click into a parallel mental plane. At that moment I was actually able to visualize the enormous Tesla coil and sense its tremendous electrical vibrations pulsating through the earth. The telluric current was enough to feel through my entire body. Perhaps I was feeling the standing waves Tesla emitted over a hundred years ago. My mind suddenly snapped back into reality and tuned into a few Deftones songs. I knew at that exact moment I was ready to read their show. I left immediately for Red Rocks!

Energy ratings follow; Energy level 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest

Venue: Energy Level: 5

The stairs leading from the parking lot to the Red Rocks entrance were a long haul, but the site at the apex was well worth the trek. I was met by two huge pillars of sandstone (Ship Rock and Creation Rock) which stand on opposite sides of the amphitheatre. Together they create perfect “au natural” acoustics. Pretty amazing to think that hardly any tweaking was necessary to create the “surround sound.” What also made this venue so spectacular was its extremely strong vortex. It seemed to originate from the very epicenter of the stage. The pull from its energy was so intense it felt like I was sensing what happened in the past, while being in the present, but looking into future. Very Tesla and very cool!

Band and Music Energy: Level 5

The Deftones [Chino Moreno (lead vocals and guitar), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Frank Delgado (keyboards and turntables), Abe Cunningham (drums and percussion) and Sergio Vega (bass, standing in for Chi Cheng)] were off the grid as soon as they hit the stage! Their metaphysical musings, atmospheric tones and raw metal crunch seemed to thrust a bolt of white light into the night air. The bright bursts made for an ultra explosive visual. At times Chino seemed to jump directly on top of a vibrant wave of light. The band’s use of multicolored lasers (also a Tesla invention) added to the mystical experience and made it feel as though the band was plugging the audience directly into the Universe’s dynamic, electric pulse. It was clear the Deftones were an ideal band for this type of venue.

Side note: Another level of divine-like energy was added to the show when Chino gave a shout out to Chi Cheng. (Chi is their bassist whose 2008 car accident put him in a minimally conscious state. He is currently receiving top of the line medical treatment and will hopefully make a full recovery very soon. For more information go to http://oneloveforchi.com). It seemed like Chino was trying to get in touch with Chi through some sort of quantum communication. Perhaps the frequencies being projected were able to travel through some kind of aether-like diamond lattice and reach or resonate with Chi. I hope so.

Fan Energy: Level 5

The fans connected with the Deftones’ raw energy immediately. When the band hit the stage, the crowd rushed forward and in an instant began moving to the rhythms as one huge human-like wave. The intensity of the fans could be seen and felt from the pit all the way back to the venue’s last rows. Some rode the strong wave of emotion near the stage, while others floated towards the back to settle into their own serene dreamscape. Overall, the combination of power and tranquility made for an uplifting, positive vibe and seemed to mark the event as being no ordinary Deftones show; one the fans would surely never forget!

Overall Show Energy: Level 5

The beauty of the Red Rocks juxtaposed with the Deftones’ ability to connect with the fans on an emotive level made for a truly supernatural experience. The band played their music as though it was supposed to be felt on a higher plane. The audience sensed this and tapped into the magical experience. This mystical encounter was hard to let go of, at least for me. Before heading back into reality I stopped to look out from the amphitheatre’s highest point. I was able to see a deep aura of purple and red emitting from the stage (red often symbolizes love and passion for life, while purple often indicates the ability to connect with the Universe’s subconscious). The aura gradually spread out and enveloped the entire venue, spilling into the surrounding valley aptly named the Garden of the Angels. It became clear why musicians often say they experience some sort of spiritual or supernatural enlightenment at Red Rocks. Some even say it changes them and their creative endeavors forever.

Psychic Show Tidbits:

I parked next to a car with the license plate 888. This was a great sign. The number 888 is one of my favorites. The number 8 itself is associated with the infinity symbol and 8s in triplet form often signify that an abundance of positive changes will be happening very soon.

Another bizarre but very cool experience occurred while I was walking underneath the large parking lot lights. A few flickered off and on, then one blew out completely. Perhaps I was still charged with some form of remnant Tesla-like energy!
