Review /Reading:

I decided to listen to AWOLNATION’s debut record Megalithic Symphony old-school style, via a 180-gram LP for my preshow music meditation. Hearing the delicious goth-pop songs (“Sail”, “Guilty Filthy Soul”) through pressed vinyl instead of digital MP3 format seemed to put my head into overdrive. My synopses ignited on all levels and instantly connected my creative right brain with my analytical left brain. The syncopation between hemispheres allowed me to enjoy their electro-metal melodies and dissect their space-time tinged lyrics all while contemplating the latest in string theory particle physics. This quasi-coupled state of mind seemed to have an affect on my electronics. The lights began to flicker and blink, the record player intermittently skipped over songs and my computer pulled up random websites pertaining to astrophysics and M-theory. Electrical anomalies like this are standard fare in my world, but I have to admit I was a little taken aback when the lights turned off just as my laptop pulled up an article about Yuri Garagain, the first human to travel to space on the Vostok 3KA-3 spacecraft. (Yuri vaguely resembles AWOLNATION’s creative visionary and lead singer Aaron Bruno, and his alias, Bruno Von Hammer. Perhaps Von Hammer was trying to infiltrate my mind waves.) This bizarre occurrence seemed to be a sign that AWOLNATION’s live show would be a real-time, out-of-this-world experience.

Band Energy: 5/5

AWOLNATION’s all-consuming cosmic energy was apparent as soon as they leapt onto the stage. They struck each and every chord with such raw emotion and immense force they generated sparks of bright, white light. The tiny but extremely powerful rays burst around the stage and pulsated in time with the music. This was most notable during the songs “Soul Wars” and “Burn it Down”, where guitarists Christopher Thorn and Kenney Carkeet, bassist David Amezcua and drummer Hayden Scott hit their power chords in perfect unison. The super-synergy between the energy sparks and music seemed to reach an apex as Aaron Bruno sang the 12 minute epic “Knights of Shame”. The flashy little packets of dynamo lifted “Von Hammer” above the stage to the point where it looked like he was levitating, albeit for only a second. The sight was something I’ve never seen before and probably never will again, at least in this world.

Fan Energy: 4/5

AWOLNATION’s devoted fans seemed to reserve all of their built-up energy solely for this show. As soon as the band hit the stage, the fans hit the ceiling. Ten or more people could be seen crowd surfing at any given time. The kinetic energy was so intense that shocks bounced off people every time they touched. It looked and felt like being inside a live plasma ball! The air of electricity did not bother the frenzied fans. They were there to forget their daily worries and instead, as AWOLNATION suggests, “dance like the world was ending.”

Overall Show Reading: 5/5

It is definitely worth seeing AWOLNATION perform their supernatural symphonies in a live setting. The connection they have with the audience is one of the strongest I’ve seen in quite some time. Their songs are about survival of the human spirit in a world gone amuck. It’s a theme that is hard to put into a positive-leaning pop music context, but they perform with a passion that creates a vibrant, otherworldly atmosphere. This is a true talent and one that should not go unnoticed.

Psychic Tidbits:

The night before the show, I saw a guy wearing a NASA “Its Only Rocket Science” shirt. It is a design that is not readily available, so I filed it away in my mind as being unique. At the show I saw the exact same shirt on another guy. Coincidence?

While driving to the show, I saw a Tesla Vision insignia for a neon sign company. I’ve never seen the company before but oddly enough, when pulling out from the parking lot I saw a truck with the same Tesla Vision logo painted on its side.

I charged my cell phone to 100% just prior to the show. It went dead as soon as I set foot in the venue. No juice, nothing.

Jack White’s Debut Solo Album!

The Tesla Girl Society feels there is a strong kinship with fellow Nikola Tesla enthusiast Jack White. (His Third Man Records moniker even incorporates Wardenclyffe /Tesla Tower imagery!) In our minds Jack White is top seed when it comes to loving Tesla as much as, if not more than, The Tesla Girl Society so we are thrilled to hear Jack White’s first solo album Blunderbuss will be available April 23/24 through Third Man Records. If you’d like to check out the first single “Love Interruption” you can find it below:

We can’t wait to hear more from the album and hope to connect with Jack White ala Tesla style soon!

Show Readings by Cheyenne: Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter

Review/Reading:

It’s a standard preshow ritual of mine to play an artists’ repertoire of music. It helps put my mind into a melodious state so I can understand the musicians’ musical ethos and connect with them on some sort of mental and emotional level. True to form, I decided to prep for Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter’s performance by playing their songs en route to the venue (The Showbox Marketplace). Their gentle sonicscapes and mystical narratives must have put me in a dreamlike state, because I inadvertently found myself parked in front of a psychic shop instead of the concert venue. My lightheaded miscalculation might have been coincidental, but my theory is that everything happens for a reason. I took the blunder as a positive sign. Veering back onto course I knew I was ready to enter the sonic portal of Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter and experience their esoteric world.

Venue Energy: 2/5

Most venues with storied histories such as the Showbox Marketplace have a warm energy flowing through their doors. Unfortunately, for some reason the Showbox’s energy felt stagnant and very cold. Shrugging off its initial austere quality, I entered and approached the stage. I hoped the coldness would dissipate. Luckily, during Jesse’s set the iciness moved towards the periphery and warmth returned. Perhaps the preshow frosty-effect was an anomaly, or maybe it was just a bad night for a lot of people in a confined, soundproofed space.

Band Energy: 5/5

Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter exuded a strong yet gentle quality as they stepped up to the stage. While the energy emanated from the entire the band, the strongest pull stemmed from lead songstress Jesse Sykes. Her magnetic presence could literally be seen: small sparks flew from the mic to her hand and a white-yellowish glow hovered around her silhouette throughout the show. The phosphorescent aura-like spheres intensified during songs that seem to be strewn with transcendental and seraphic themes (“Come to Mary” and “Pleasuring the Divine” to name a couple). A celestial-like connection also occurred during jam sessions between Jesse, guitarist Phil Wandscher, bassist Bill Herzog and drummer Eric Eagle. Each time their paths crossed the yellowish glow twisted around to form the number eight or infinity symbol. Truly amazing!

Fan Energy 5/5:

Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter’s fans were quiet, but very intense. They submerged their hearts and souls into each and every song and were happy to stay lost within Jesse’s quixotic lyrics describing life, love and yes, the hereafter. The audience was so entrenched that they stayed well after the band left the stage and security had to be sent in to clear out the devotees. A real rarity for a non metal, punk or rock show.

Overall Show Reading: 4/5

If not for the venue, this show certainly would’ve been a 5. Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter create symphonic stories about a soul’s quest to understand the beautiful yet dark terrain of life. It could be said they create sonic paintings, seamlessly connecting musical compositions with narratives so the mind can simultaneously hear the melodious chords and see the vivid imagery. We can only hope more artists will reach this plane, so music aficionados of all subgenres can rediscover the somewhat forgotten art of experiencing music on all levels (mental, physical and emotional) and what it feels like to truly love music.

Psychic Tidbits

The night before the show, I was reading an article about Our Lady Guadalupe, Saint Theresa and a concept called “the miracle of roses” (a Catholic miracle where roses symbolize that a prayer has been heard or a divine presence is helping a person through hardships). I hardly ever see this idea mentioned, but chalked it up as a unique occurrence.

The next evening, I was taken aback when I saw Jesse’s bags of gear and numerous guitar pedals. To my amazement, images of St. Theresa, Our Lady Guadalupe and a multitude of roses were painted on the bags.

During the show I thought about how the live mix sounded spectacular and made note of it. Within a minute of thinking this, guitarist Phil Wandescher gave a shout out to their sound engineer for the evening: “We’d like to give a huge thanks to the sound guy from The Sadies for doing an amazing job! Really great! ”

On my way home images of flora, fauna and gothic-like fairy tales continued to pop up in my head. A few minutes later I passed by a museum with images of deer, birds and forests painted on its windows. It was a mural created for a forthcoming fairytale exhibit. Perhaps it was a signal to stay connected with Jesse Sykes’ fairytale-like lyrics as well!
